The number becomes useful only when its starting point is clear. A reading without a known access location, direction of travel, or starting reference has limited value. The counter also does not measure depth. A finding that appears 42 feet along the inspected route could be shallow or deep, depending on the sewer’s slope and the property layout. The reading alone cannot tell a homeowner where to cut concrete, open a wall, or excavate soil.

The counter can help note where that image appeared relative to the starting reference. It cannot prove the pipe’s exact depth, remaining service life, ownership, or the correct repair on its own.
Water and debris can also block the lens. A severe restriction can prevent the camera head from passing. In those situations, drain cleaning may be discussed so the pipe wall can be viewed more clearly, but the appropriate order depends on the symptoms and conditions found. A distance reading taken at an obstructed lens does not identify the obstruction’s material or cause.
When a Separate Locator May Be Used
Some sewer camera heads or inspection systems include a compatible transmitter, sometimes called a sonde. When that feature is available and conditions permit, a separate receiver may be used above the surface to help locate the camera head and estimate depth. Not every camera system, property, or inspection uses this workflow.
The two measurements answer different questions:
- The distance counter estimates how far the cable traveled from its reference point along the pipe route.
- A compatible transmitter and surface receiver may help identify where the camera head is beneath the property and may provide a depth estimate.
Even surface locating does not replace utility marking, site evaluation, access planning, or other requirements that may apply before excavation. It also does not determine who owns a pipe section or who is responsible for a repair.
When no compatible locating feature is used, the plumber may still narrow a finding by comparing the counter reading with visible cleanouts, known building exits, pipe routing, prior records, symptoms, and other diagnostic evidence. The appropriate method depends on what decision must be made next.

- Is the depth known, estimated, or not yet measured?
- Does the finding need cleaning, another camera pass, locating, or repair evaluation?
- Can the relevant footage and distance be included in the inspection record?
Avoid opening a cleanout or feeding anything into the line yourself to confirm the number. A backed-up sewer can release wastewater when a cap is removed, and improper equipment can become lodged or damage the piping.
